144 Islands is dedicated to the production of quality single-vineyard wines from our home estate in the Bay of Islands, as well as specially selected sites throughout the Far North of New Zealand. We place emphasis on producing wines that convey a point of time and place, honouring the rich history of our region, the birthplace of a nation.

144 Islands 2018 Rosé

Dry in style, this Rosé is made from handpicked Syrah grapes sourced from the Puketotara vineyard near Kerikeri and made with a special dedication to my close friend, Mathilde, who helped me set up my home block vineyard. Mirroring the personality of its namesake this wine is bright and vivacious. Strawberry Cream – Morello Cherry – Provençal Herbs.

144 Islands 2018 Sauvignon Blanc

Home Vineyard. Taken from New Zealand’s northernmost Sauvignon Blanc vines, grown at an altitude of over 300 metres on a hill overlooking the Bay of Islands. Picked early to retain freshness, this wine shows poise and precision. The first expression of our Home vineyard’s terroir. Passionfruit - Snow Pea - Jalapeño.

144 Islands 2017 Chardonnay

Taken from the sheltered slopes of the Brook Lane vineyard in Mangawhai Heads. The grapes for this wine were handpicked by friends and family on the 3rd March, and the resulting wine shows great drinkability and ageing potential. Toasted Brioche – Grilled Peach – Creme Caramel.

144 Islands 2017 Pinot Gris - SOLD OUT

Slightly off-dry in style, this Pinot Gris was sourced from the special Brook Lane vineyard, located on a sheltered and sun-drenched slope just outside of Mangawhai Heads. The grapes for this wine were handpicked by friends and family on the 3rd March 2017. Meyer Lemon – White Nectarine – Rose Petal.

 
 
 
 

When I was a boy, I wanted to be a farmer.

I wanted to be outside all day, work with the land to grow things, and I wanted to produce something that would let everybody know undoubtedly how awesome my little piece of the world was. It wasn't until I was older I realised the most expressive way to do this was with wine. And so my love affair started. After travelling the world, I've returned home to where it all began, having planted a small vineyard with a myriad of grape varieties to express the genuinely unique terroir of the Bay of Islands.

I'm passionate about creating wines that not only taste great but tell a story of a time and place. My vineyard is unirrigated, exposed and elevated, with a complex mix of volcanic clay soils, making for a sensationally rich depth of flavour in the small crops I yield. All of the work is done by hand and most of it at night-time. I love my home, and I hope you love these wines as much as I've enjoyed making them for you.

"Northland has a knack for turning out pinot gris with richness and tantalising creamy textures, and this is no exception.

Created by Jake Dromgool, one of New Zealand’s star young viticulturists (he’s been on TV and everything!), it possesses ripe nashi, quince, and roast peach flavours and a lengthy dry finish. Named after the smorgasbord of tiny islands scattered throughout the Bay of Islands, the 144 Islands is all charm and sass and spicy perfection with Thai muu pork."
